Outeniqua Farmers’ Market

Western Cape Taste Experience

The explosion of markets all over South Africa led Dianne Stewart and her daughters, Lissa and Jessica, on a trip around South Africa in search of the best market food. Market Food is a round-up of the choice of markets and recipes, proudly supplied by some of the vendors.

The following excerpt is taken from Market Food – South Africa by Dianne Stewart, Jessica Cairns, Lissa Stewart (BookStorm), R150 from leading bookstores nationwide.

The Outeniqua Farmers’ Market, established in 2011, becomes the heart of George, a place where friends meet.

Outeniqua Farmers’ Market

Cradled by the Outeniqua mountains, this 5-hectare market, consisting of more than 120 stallholders, offers quality food and craft by local farmers and craftspeople. The word ‘Outeniqua’ means ‘the land where honey comes from’ and market owner Deon Mocke’s desire is that the Outeniqua Farmers’ Market, established in 2011, becomes the heart of George, a place where friends meet. ‘It will put George on the map,’ he says. Children’s activities include a unique ‘choo-choo’ train, making it a family-friendly market. The market is open every Saturday.

Location: Opposite Garden Route Mall, N2, George
