The sport of mountain biking has seen unprecedented growth in recent years, with South Africa at the forefront. Our fantastic weather and incredible scenery has played its part of course, but it’s the outdoor, adventure-loving nature of South Africans that’s really fuelled SA’s rise as a global mountain biking hotspot. Apart from the Absa Cape Epic, which is without a doubt the biggest mountain biking event on earth, here are five standout MTB events to take serious note of…
One of the first events early on in the calendar each year takes place in the heart of the Tankwa Karoo with some of the best trails SA has to offer. The three-day stage race is fully catered, with riders staying in tents on the Kaleo Guest farm for all three stages of the race. The unique rock formations of the Tankwa Karoo form an intricate part of the routes, offering a truly special and most unique riding experience.

The next equally unique experience is the annual Tour of Legends that takes place almost entirely within the boundaries of a Big Five game reserve. The marshals at this event are in fact game rangers that help keep the dangerous animals in check while some 300 lucky souls get to ride elephant trails. Another standout feature of the event is that riders get to stay in absolute luxury, and all catering is included in the entry as well.
The bespoke Entabeni Nature Reserve and Legends Golf and Safari Resort plays host to the event in the Waterberg region. This also means that the event is malaria free! What more could you ask for?
This six-day stage race encapsulates the best the Southern Cape and Garden Route have to offer. The appeal of the event lies in the point-to-point nature of the stage race, hopping from town to town, taking in the sights and landscapes along the way. The event has become increasingly popular for international adventure tourists.
The magnificent Swartberg Pass, the cliff trails around Mossel Bay, indigenous forests, and Karoo splendour are just some of the draw cards the event dishes out to attract riders each year.
South Africa’s most prestigious national marathon series and the biggest of its kind in the world. The series of seven events travels across South Africa and gives riders a wide variety of riding experiences, from coastal to bushveld and highveld to winelands.
There are of course those who prefer to stay closer to home and the Nissan TrailSeeker Series ticks this box squarely. The Nissan TrailSeeker Series offers two regional series that provide riders with adventure on their doorsteps by giving them enjoyable trails within two hours’ drive from either Gauteng or the Western Cape. Gautengers have welcomed the series, in what are now five fully subscribed events that all sell-out weeks before, with up to 3 300 riders per event! The fledgling Western Cape Nissan TrailSeeker Series is also showing steady growth, and with venues like Meerendal Wine Estate, Hermanus, and Grabouw, it’s easy to see why.
