Wild Oats Community Farmers’ Market

Western Cape Taste Experience

The explosion of markets all over South Africa led Dianne Stewart and her daughters, Lissa and Jessica, on a trip around South Africa in search of the best market food. Market Food is a round-up of the choice of markets and recipes, proudly supplied by some of the vendors.

The following excerpt is taken from Market Food – South Africa by Dianne Stewart, Jessica Cairns, Lissa Stewart (BookStorm), R150 from leading bookstores nationwide.

Founders of the Wild Oats Market, established in 1999, Rose Brettell and Susan Garner believe that ‘country markets offer a healthy community-building opportunity’. ‘The Wild Oats cornerstones,’ they say, ‘are regional, fresh and healthy food as well as vendor honesty and reliability.’ Market sellers must be residents of the Garden Route, and food producers are urged to source ingredients from local growers where possible.
