The Baviaans Camino “slackpacking” 4-day hike

Our Heritage (Local Travel)

The Baviaans Camino is a 4-day hiking trail over the Baviaanskloof and Kouga Mountain Range, following ancient roads and footpaths. The trail is unique as it can be done by foot or on horseback. It is only available between April and October on fixed dates and groups are limited to 16.

The trail is an 85km north-south route, starting outside Steytlerville in the Klein Karoo and ending just outside the small Tsitsikamma town, Kareedouw. The chance to see other people is slim, and with no cellphone reception, you have time to focus on yourself and the beauty around you. It's fully catered (breakfast, packed lunch and a cooked dinner) with accommodation in farmhouses and tents. Hikers will have to be willing to share bedrooms/tents and bathrooms.

"It's absolute bliss. A spiritual journey where you will reconnect with your inner self. Come prepared, you will conquer a few mountains," says Esti Stewart from Baviaans Camino.

The trail is unique as it can be done by foot or on horseback.

In terms of pricing, you're looking at R7 200 pp sharing plus R1 500 if you want to do it on horseback.
